Have you ever noticed how children can spend countless minutes staring at the Moon, pointing at aeroplanes flying overhead or asking endless questions about the stars? Their curiosity is one of the most beautiful parts of childhood, and this week at ChildSol, we embraced that curiosity by taking our learners on an unforgettable journey beyond our planet.
Our classrooms became launch pads for adventure as our little astronauts explored the fascinating world of Outer Space. Through creative crafts, imaginative role play, hands-on learning and exciting discussions, our children discovered that the universe is filled with endless opportunities to learn, imagine and dream.
Outer Space is much more than planets, rockets and astronauts. It encourages children to ask questions, solve problems and think about the world beyond what they can see. Every activity throughout the week was carefully planned to nurture curiosity while supporting important areas of early childhood development, from creativity and communication to fine motor skills and early scientific thinking.
Learning Through Exploration
One of the greatest joys of teaching young children is watching their faces light up when they discover something new. This week was filled with those special moments.
Our Tiny Tots explored the theme by creating beautiful torn-paper planet collages. While they happily selected colours, tore paper into smaller pieces and carefully glued everything into place, they were also strengthening the small muscles needed for writing, improving hand-eye coordination and developing patience through creative play.
The Playful Pioneers had an exciting opportunity to become astronauts by designing and decorating their very own space helmets. Before long, our classrooms were transformed into imaginary spacecraft as children pretended to travel through the galaxy, discovering new planets and embarking on their own adventures.
Through role play, children are given the freedom to communicate, cooperate, express themselves and use their imaginations. A simple handmade space helmet can suddenly become the beginning of an enormous adventure when seen through the eyes of a child.
Meanwhile, our Stellar Achievers explored the Solar System through matching activities and creative learning experiences. As they identified different planets and completed missing halves of the Solar System, they began recognising that every planet has its own fascinating characteristics.
Some of the exciting discoveries explored through the theme included:
- Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
- Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System.
- Saturn is famous for its remarkable rings.
- Earth is our home and the only planet currently known to support life.
- The Sun is a star and provides the energy that makes life on Earth possible.
Activities such as matching, identifying and comparing also encourage children to observe carefully, remember information and recognise similarities and differences—all important foundations for future learning.
More Than Just Arts and Crafts
Although our classrooms quickly filled with colourful planets, space helmets and imaginative creations, something much more meaningful was happening behind all the fun.
Our children were learning to become curious thinkers.
Rather than simply being given information, they were being encouraged to wonder. Why is Mars red? Why does Saturn have rings? How do astronauts get into space? Why can we see the Moon at night?
A child who becomes comfortable asking questions also begins to understand that they can actively participate in learning instead of simply receiving information.
That is an incredibly valuable lesson.
Every scientist, engineer, inventor and astronaut began with curiosity about how something worked or why something happened. By encouraging that same curiosity during the early years, we help children develop confidence in exploring unfamiliar ideas.

Bringing Space Learning Home
One of the wonderful things about an Outer Space theme is that the learning can continue long after the school day ends.
Parents do not need a telescope, complicated science equipment or expert knowledge of astronomy. Sometimes one of the most memorable learning experiences can simply begin by walking outside together after sunset and looking upwards.
Ask your child what they can see. Can they find the Moon? Are there stars visible? Which one appears brightest? What do they imagine it would feel like to walk on the Moon?
There does not always have to be a correct answer. Sometimes the conversation itself is where the learning happens.
Families could also try a few simple activities together:
- Read a bedtime story about astronauts, rockets or planets.
- Make a family rocket using a cardboard box and recycled materials.
- Look at the Moon on different evenings and notice how its appearance changes.
- Ask your child which planet they would visit if they had their own spaceship—and why.
A question as simple as “If you discovered a new planet, what would you call it?” can lead to the most wonderfully imaginative conversations.

Wits Anglo American Digital Dome – Johannesburg

Formerly known as the Wits Planetarium, the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome has been transformed into a modern, high-tech digital facility at the University of the Witwatersrand. Its immersive dome technology allows audiences to experience astronomy and other scientific subjects on an enormous surrounding screen.
For a child who has spent the week learning about planets, this could be an extraordinary next step. Instead of simply looking at a picture of the Solar System, children can experience enormous projections of planets, stars and the universe around them.
Public programmes include astronomical presentations, and shows generally combine digital content with opportunities to learn about the planets, constellations and objects visible in the night sky. The venue advises that its shows are approximately an hour long and public tickets are currently sold through Webtickets.
Parents should check the current programme before travelling so they can select a show appropriate for their child’s age.
Sci-Bono Discovery Centre – Newtown, Johannesburg

Sci-Bono is an excellent destination for families whose children seem to ask “Why?” about absolutely everything!
Situated in Johannesburg’s Newtown precinct, Sci-Bono describes itself as a science centre focused on supporting mathematics, science and technology education. It is also recognised as Southern Africa’s largest science centre.
One of the great things about Sci-Bono is that children are encouraged to interact with science rather than simply look at it. The centre says it has almost 400 permanent interactive exhibits, with visitors encouraged to touch, experiment, press, play and discover.
Although Sci-Bono explores much more than astronomy alone, that is precisely what makes it such a wonderful extension of our Outer Space week. Children can begin with an interest in planets and quickly discover that the same curiosity leads into physics, engineering, technology and many other areas of science.
The centre is currently open seven days a week, although parents should still check its website for current programmes, exhibitions and opening information before visiting.
Sci-Enza Science Centre – University of Pretoria

Families closer to Pretoria can explore Sci-Enza, the University of Pretoria’s hands-on science centre.
Sci-Enza is designed to make science interactive and accessible to schoolchildren, students and members of the wider community. Rather than presenting science as something that only happens inside textbooks, the centre encourages visitors to interact with exhibits and discover concepts through experience.
The centre also runs science enrichment activities and has previously offered programmes during school holidays, after school and on Saturdays, encouraging skills such as problem-solving, communication and critical thinking.
This makes it another valuable option for parents who want to nurture a child’s growing interest in how the world—and perhaps even the universe—works.
Important for parents: Sci-Enza’s current visitor information states that members of the public should arrange an appointment before visiting so that access to the University campus can be organised. Parents should therefore contact the centre and confirm arrangements before travelling.
Astronomical Society of Southern Africa – Johannesburg Centre

For families who want to move from pictures of space to actually looking into the night sky, the Johannesburg Centre of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa offers something particularly special.
The Centre is part of ASSA, a community that brings together amateur and professional astronomers as well as members of the public who are simply fascinated by astronomy.
Its Johannesburg facility has observatories and a number of telescopes, including access to the historic 26.5-inch Innes Telescope. The Centre holds regular meetings and occasionally organises public observing sessions where visitors can experience astronomy in a much more direct way.
Imagine a child who spent the week creating Saturn from paper getting the opportunity, perhaps one day, to look through a telescope and see a real planet in the night sky. Those are the experiences that can transform curiosity into a lifelong interest.
Because public observing sessions take place from time to time rather than operating like an everyday attraction, families should check the Centre’s website for upcoming events before planning a visit.
From the Classroom to the Universe
These family outings demonstrate something we strongly believe at ChildSol: learning does not exist only inside the classroom.
A classroom activity can introduce an idea.
A conversation at home can deepen it.
And a real-world experience can make that idea unforgettable.
A child might first encounter Saturn while creating a Solar System craft at school. Later, they might see Saturn projected above them inside a digital dome. Eventually, they may look through a telescope and see the planet with their own eyes.
That is how small learning experiences can become big memories.
Looking Up Together
Perhaps the greatest lesson children learned this week was not simply the names of the planets or how astronauts travel into space.
It was that curiosity has no limits.
Every question asked in the classroom reminded us that learning begins with wonder. When children are encouraged to ask “Why?”, “How?” and “What if?”, they develop the confidence to explore, investigate and discover.

Today’s child carefully piecing together a paper planet, proudly wearing a handmade space helmet or pretending to launch a rocket may one day become an engineer, scientist, inventor or perhaps even an astronaut.
But whatever they eventually become, we hope they never lose the curiosity that made them look upwards in the first place.
